Food Technology (FT) Curriculum
Food Technology is part of the Design and Technology subject of the National Curriculum. At Melrose our main area of study is food and nutrition, where the pupils are taught to understand the value of food, storage, preparation and the use of several materials, meal planning, practical food preparation, hygiene and safety, as well as the use of several tools and various manipulation skills to produce a satisfactory product.
Our main aim is to educate on healthy eating and teach the pupils how to produce a simple balanced meal, how to budget for the costs and to prepare the pupils to cook for themselves in adulthood. Students at present are following the Sainsbury’s award system in which they acquire certification at Bronze, Silver or Gold standard. This is a nationally recognized award scheme.
